    Masala Chai | Indian Masala Tea

    A hot cup of Indian Masala Chai is all you need to feel refreshed! With step-wise pictures and detailed recipe, this masala chai is best for both mornings & evenings.

    Masala Chai

    A few years ago, I used to not even make tea let alone drink it. I have been an avid coffee drinker for about a decade but I grew up drinking neither coffee nor tea. It all changed when my husband started making ginger tea and what started as a one off thing almost became a weekend ritual. Recently due to some health issues, I had to stop drinking coffee altogether and may be that’s why, I started liking tea a lot more. I have been making different versions of tea and the recent obsession has been a strong Indian Masala Chai!

    There is an odd tagline to one of the popular tea joints here and it says “India runs on Chai”, I don’t think it is an exaggeration. Full fat milk, lots of sugar, spiked with ginger, lots of cardamom, watered down, hot, warm, cold, mix of spices, lemon – there are so many versions of India tea and obviously, every household has their heirloom recipe for how the tea is made. I am obviously new to the tea game and my recipe of Masala Chai is purely based on my experiments so far.

    This version of Masala Chai is spiked with a lot of spices and it is not only refreshing, it is quite healthy too. Cinnamon, Cloves, Cardamom, Ginger and (optionally) Black Pepper is what I used to make my Masala tea. Initially, the husband found it too spicy (it does seem odd to describe the taste of the tea) but soon we got accustomed to it, what with the change in climate around here. Of course, no tea is complete without snacks. I usually make simple stuff like Roasted Makhana, Spicy Masala Peanuts, Masala Pori or other deep fried snacks but for this version of Masala Chai, the best snack would be Samosa and that’s what I made.     By the way, been searching for these authentic “tea glasses” since long and the husband gifted these a while back. Just like filter coffee, tea is also more of a sensory experience – agree?!

    MEASUREMENT

    1 cup = 250ml, 1 tablespoon = 15ml, 1 teaspoon = 5ml

    Ingredients
      

    • 2 cups Milk
    • ½ cup Water
    • 2 teaspoon Black Tea Leaf Powder
    • 4 teaspoon Sugar
    • 2 inch Ginger Piece
    • 2 Cloves
    • 2 Green Cardamoms
    • 1 inch Cinnamon Piece
    • 4-5 Black Pepper (optional - I didn't use any)
    Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions
     

    • Peel off the ginger skin and get all the spices required for making tea masala. In a mortar & pestle, crush them well.
    • In a pot, add the crushed tea masala along with water. Heat it on low flame for 2-3 mins.
    • Next add tea powder and boil it for 4-5 mins on low flame.
    • Now add milk and mix it well.
    • Boil the tea on low flame for 7-10 mins. If the tea boils too soon, stir it quickly using a spoon and let it simmer.
    • Atlast, add sugar and mix it well.
    • Strain the tea onto tea cups.
    • Serve hot with any snacks.

    Detailed step-wise picture recipe of making Masala Chai | Indian Masala Tea

    1. Peel off the ginger skin and get all the spices required for making tea masala. In a mortar & pestle, crush them well.

    2. In a pot, add the crushed tea masala along with water. Heat it on low flame for 2-3 mins.

    3. Next add tea powder and boil it for 4-5 mins on low flame.

    4. Now add milk and mix it well.

    5. Boil the tea on low flame for 7-10 mins. If the tea boils too soon, stir it quickly using a spoon and let it simmer.

    6. At last, add sugar and mix it well.

    7. Strain the tea onto tea cups.

    8. Serve hot with any snacks.

    Recipe Notes

    • Adjust the amount of spices as per preference. If you are new to masala tea, start with least amount and then slowly increase.
    • Tea gets it taste from slow simmering for long time.
    • Adjust sugar as per preference.

      I certainly agree that tea tastes better in glasses or china cups, although this kind of tea does call for generous sized and thick glasses. What a thoughtful gift. In Russia we had beautiful silver holders with handles, and I think I bought them for everyone but myself. Regretting it now.

      I'm a big, big, big fan of masala chai, and make my own chai masala at home. I don't like cinnamon in my tea, so I don't use that.
      I love the idea of grinding the spices fresh, just before making tea every day. I also loved how you have added in some ginger too. 🙂

      I am a tea lover, and Whenever I feel excessive headaches due to work load, I prefer sipping strong masala chai. But your mentioned ingredients were lovely to know, especially Green Cardamoms, which I never thought of. Last week, I drank masala tea at one of the bee-theme restaurants in Mohali, which offers tea varieties with snacks too. Keep Sharing like this.
