This has got to be the easiest recipes that can be made very quickly – it just has 5 ingredients and all it takes it mixing them together. I can assure you that you will not go back to a packaged hot chocolate mix once you try this out! Also checkout my cold coffee recipe.

How to make Homemade Instant Hot Chocolate Mix

    Ingredients

Cocoa Powder is one of the main ingredients for making homemade instant hot chocolate mix. I use unsweetened baking cocoa or dutch-processed cocoa powder – it is not overpowering but extra chocolatey!

Milk Powder or Dry Milk is the other main ingredient for making this instant hot cocoa mix recipe. It adds creaminess to the hot cocoa and turns it thicker, richer too.

Semi-Sweet Dark Chocolate Chunks or chocolate chips or morsels are an important addition to my instant hot chocolate mix recipe. It also adds the much-needed richness and fullness when the hot cocoa is made. This is my secret ingredient to turn the homemade beverage better than any coffee shop!

Sugar is the sweetener added to the mixture recipe and can be adjusted depending on the sweet preferences. This recipe does not make hot chocolate that is overly sweet and is perfect to indulge in.

Salt adds balance to the homemade instant hot chocolate mix recipe and although its only a pinch, it is an important ingredient.

Other flavor enhancers like Cinnamon Powder, Vanilla, Espresso or Marshmallows can be added in depending on availability and preferences.

For full list of ingredients and exact measurements, check the recipe below.

To make yourself hot chocolate, add 2 heaped tablespoons of homemade instant hot chocolate mix into a pot.

Add 1 cup of milk at room temperature. You can also add water if you do not prefer milk.

Using a whisk, mix well without any lumps.

Now place the pot on low heat and stir using a whisk continuously. In 4-5 minutes, as the mixtures begins to boil remove from heat.

Serve hot immediately. You can top it off with a sprinkle of cocoa powder, marshmallows or whipped cream for extra richness.

    Recipe Notes

    • You can adjust the amount of sugar depending on sweetness preferred. Increase it to ½ cup for added sweetness.
    • If you are using sweet chocolate chips, adjust the sugar quantity accordingly.
    • The hot chocolate can be made with plain water or milk. It tastes richer and thicker with milk.
    • Do not place the hot chocolate mixture without breaking the lumps first to make a smoother, thick hot cocoa.
    • The hot chocolate mixture should be stored in an airtight container to keep it lump-free and stop moisture from reacting with it.

    Top Tip

The ingredients should all be at room temperature before making the mix. This will ensure even mixing in without any lumps.

Storing in an airtight container is essential to maintain the freshness of the hot cocoa mix. Always use a clean, dry spoon and tighten the lid of the jar immediately after using.

    Substitutions & Variations

The chocolate chips or chunks used in the recipe can be semi-sweet or regular, but ensure that they are bake-friendly. This will ensure that they do not burn when the hot chocolate is made.

I prefer to use unsweetened dutch-processed cocoa powder to make the best tasting homemade instant hot chocolate mix but technically any unsweetened cocoa powder can also be used.

Other flavor enhancers like Cinnamon Powder, Vanilla, Espresso or Marshmallows can be added in depending on availability and preferences.

The hot chocolate can be made with plain water or milk as preferred, although it tastes thick & richer when made with milk.

    Storage & Serving Suggestions

Refer to the recipe for more details about how to use the homemade instant hot cocoa mix to make yourself a hot cuppa. The mix should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for shelf-life upto a month. Shake the mixture well enough before taking out 2 heaped tablespoons of the mix to make your hot beverage as the chocolate chunks can sink to the bottom of the jar.
