Spicy and flavorful multi-layered Indian flat bread, that is just good on its own! A fun square shaped Masala Paratha recipe that is super simple to make.

    Masala Paratha

This blog requires no introduction to my love for Parathas – the stuffed Indian flat bread. When I had made the Kadai Paneer gravy, I wanted a really delicious flat bread to go with instead of regular chapati/roti. That’s when the idea of Masala Paratha came up.

    Masala Paratha

Something spicy, something light, something flavorful and something that is really beautiful – that is Masala Paratha for you. This flat bread has all the spices added into the dough even while it is made and hence, it is just delicious on its own. While the ingredients for the Masala Paratha are almost standard, I wanted to make it in a fun shape. The last time I made Triangle Parathas, we enjoyed it a lot so I thought why not make these square shaped?

    Masala Paratha

The art of rolling a paratha, roti or any Indian flat bread into perfect circle comes with practice. If yours take up the shapes of different countries, fret not – these Square Masala Parathas are for you. It is not too difficult to bring up the shape and it also helps in forming multiple layers. These Masala Paratha stay good hours, making them the perfect lunch box food or travel food. Get inventive with this base recipe and enjoy these with a good side of Kadai Paneer gravy.

    Instructions

    • In a bowl add whole wheat flour, red chilli powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, salt, 1 teaspoon of hot oil and mix it together. Add water little by little and knead it into a soft pliable dough. Set it aside for 10 mins.
    • Divide the dough into 7 equal parts and make roundels.
    • Dust a ball of dough with some whole wheat flour and roll it into a circle. Apply a few drops of oil and spread it evenly.
    • From one end, fold the circle towards the center. Repeat the same from the other end.
    • Now fold the top end towards the center. Next fold the bottom end towards the center.
    • Finally fold at the center so that the dough looks like a folded kerchief.
    • Dust it slightly with flour and roll into a square, keeping up with the shape. Roll equally on all sides to get the square shape.
    • Heat a tawa/flat pan. Gently put the rolled out Masala Paratha and cook it until tiny bubbles appear on the surface. Flip it to the other side and drizzle some oil.
    • As the other side gets golden brown spots, flip it again and drizzle few drops of oil. Remove from heat. Repeat this with the rest of the dough balls.
    • Serve hot with chopped onions, lemon wedges with a side dish of your choice. I served it with Kadai Paneer.

    Note –

    • Adjust spices as per preference.
    • Instead of onion seeds, black/white sesame seeds can be added.
    • Additionally, finely chopped coriander can be added while making the dough.
    • Use ghee or butter to cook the parathas for extra flavor.
