Bread Pizza Pockets can be easily customized depending on what ingredients are available for the filling. You can use any of the traditional pizza ingredients like onions, tomatoes, olives, jalapenos, sweet corn kernels, green bell peppers, cottage cheese or even meat pieces as desired. You can use homemade pizza sauce or this recipe can be easily semi-homemade with the use of store bought ready to use pizza sauce too. And it is very easy to sneak in any other vegetables in to the filling as well. These air fryer bread pizza pockets are a great kid-friendly snack that are loved alike by everyone at home!

How to make Air Fryer Bread Pizza Pockets Recipe

    Ingredients

Bread Slices, preferably white sandwich bread works the best for making pizza pockets. It does not matter if the bread is not fresh, as it is refreshed during the preparation.

Pizza Pockets Filling is made with a combination of mixed vegetables, depending on your choice including but not limited to onions, tomatoes, olives, jalapenos, sweet corn kernels, green bell peppers, cottage cheese or even meat pieces. I used sweet corn kernels, onions to keep the flavors to a minimum.

Spices & spice powders like Garlic Powder, Mixed Italian Herbs & Red Chilli Flakes are used to flavor the filling.

Mozzarella Cheese is added to the filling and on cooking, the cheese melts and makes the pizza pocket oogey-gooey & cheesy.

Pizza Sauce is one of the important ingredients, making the bread pockets taste exactly like pizza. You can use either store-bought or homemade sauce, depending on the availability. In case, pizza sauce is unavailable, you can use paste sauce too.

    Top Tips

The filling should be as dry as possible, so that it doesn’t spill out when cooking the bread pizza pockets. The vegetables can be cooked or sauteed if they are prone to leave moisture, so that the filling remains dry.

When the bread is dipped in water, make sure it is squeezed out completely and the bread is just moist enough to be able to fold it and seal it. If it is too soggy, it becomes hard to handle and can break apart too.

The bread should be sealed as tightly as possible, else the cheese oozes out when it is being air fried and the pizza pockets will break open.

With the use of air fryer, check the bread pizza pockets every 5 minutes and brush with some oil to avoid it becomes too dried out. The recipe calls for the pizza pockets to be cooked for 15 minutes and oil applied once in between. Depending on the power of the air fryer, you might require more or less time to cook – so keep an eye out to check if the pockets are done.

    Substitutions & Variations

Any choice of vegetable can be added as part of the filling for pizza pocket. You can also sneak in other vegetables that are not usually pizza-friendly however it is better if they are pre-cooked.

Mozzarella cheese works the best for making pizza pockets, however any type of cheese works. You can also use a combination of mozzarella and cheddar cheese.

If you do not have an air fryer, you can bake these bread pizza pockets in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20-25 minutes, flipping them over once or twice in between and applying oil as needed.

I do not personally prefer deep frying pizza pockets, especially made with bread slices as they tend to absorb too much oil and it becomes too heavy. But if you prefer, the same recipe can be used for deep-frying too.

    Storage & Serving Suggestions

Pizza Bread Pockets are best served hot with tomato ketchup, when the cheese is still oozy & gooey. On cooling down the pizza pockets do not become soggy but definitely lose crispness. It can be reheated for 2-3 minutes until it crisps up again before serving. Bread pizza pockets can also be prepared ahead of time and frozen in zip-lock bags for over a month or so. When you are ready to use them, thaw in fridge or at room temperature before air frying.

Now cut off the edges of 8 sandwich bread slices.

Fill some water in a small plate and carefully dip a slice of bread for a minute.

Next gently squeeze out the excess water by pressing it between your palms. The bread should be soft but not soggy with water.

Carefully fold the bread slice in half and tightly seal all the edges.

Prepare all the bread slices similarly and set it aside. Meanwhile preheat the air fryer at 180°C for 5-7 mins.

Place the pizza pockets in the air fryer tray and gently brush it with a teaspoon of oil.

Set the air fryer at 180°C for 15 mins. After 6 mins, remove it out and brush with a few drops of oil again.

After 15 mins of air frying, bread pizza pockets should be golden brown, crispy and fully cooked. If not, extend the cooking time by another 1-2 minutes as needed.
