Decadent and oh-so-chocolaty Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe with Step by Step Pictures. Easy Hot Cocoa Recipe - best homemade recipe ever!

With the cold winters around us, I have one more recipe that is very comforting. Imagine this – your favorite book in your hands, curled up in your favorite corner of the house and then, a cup of hot chocolate.. doesn’t it sound blissful?! It really is. I can vouch for this as this is what I did one afternoon when it was raining non-stop.

I have had many hot chocolates in my life both in a coffee shop and at home but nothing comes close to this one. I figured out this recipe in a coffee shop having their cranberry hot chocolate. As usual, I started decoding the recipe in my head and gave it a trial back home. It was good, not just good but great.

The problem with homemade hot chocolate often times is, it is very thin. Even with quality brands like Cadburys, I didn’t get the real feel of drinking hot cocoa as in a coffee shop. But with this recipe, all I had to do was use a good quality cocoa powder. The resultant hot chocolate is rich, decadent and utterly delicious. As I had some whipped cream at home, I topped it off the hot cocoa but otherwise, depending on your mood you can add either espresso, cranberry or strawberry syrup too! This is only a basic version.

    MEASUREMENT

    1 cup = 250ml, 1 tablespoon = 15ml, 1 teaspoon = 5ml

    Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoon Cocoa Powder heaped
    • 2-3 teaspoon Sugar
    • 1.5 cups Milk
    • Water ¼ cup
    • A pinch of Salt
    • ¼ teaspoon Vanilla Essence
    • Whipped Cream/Vanilla Ice Cream as needed optional
    • Chocolate Chips as needed optional
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • In a sauce pan, add cocoa powder, sugar, salt and mix well. Add ¼ cup of water and mix well until completely dissolved. Add ½ cup of milk and mix well again. Now put this sauce pan on low heat and stir continuously.
    • After 3-4 mins, it becomes very thick. Add vanilla essence and continue to stir well making sure the bottom doesn’t burn. As the mixture becomes quite thick, add 1 cup of milk and whisk well. Remove from heat.
    • Pour this into two serving glasses, top them off with whipped cream/vanilla ice cream. Sprinkle choco chips on top.
    • Serve hot immediately.

    Notes

    • Adjust the quantity of sugar as per preference. I wanted the mild bitterness of chocolate come up, so added only 3 teaspoon of sugar.
    • Adding a pinch of salt helps bring out the sweetness.
    • Keep cooking the mixture on low flame by continuously stirring. Make sure it doesn’t burn.
    • Use good quality cocoa powder.
    • Additionally, ½ teaspoon instant coffee powder or 2 teaspoon of strawberry/cranberry syrup can be added.

I am super crazy about hot chocolate, but there's only few I loved from coffee shops. They are not even hot, by the way - so I take back what I said earlier. 😀 Homemade is always better and your version is incredibly decadent! Thanks for sharing! 😉 x
